QEII National Trust Partners with Enviricard for Sustainable Membership Cards
9 February 2026
Introduction to QEII National Trust
The QEII National Trust, also known as the Queen Elizabeth the Second National Trust (Ngā Kairauhī Papa), is an independent charitable trust established in 1977 under the Queen Elizabeth the Second National Trust Act. As a statutory organisation independent from the government, its core mission is to encourage and promote the provision, protection, preservation, and enhancement of open spaces for the benefit of New Zealand. With nearly 70% of New Zealand's land in private ownership, the Trust plays a pivotal role in reversing the decline of indigenous biodiversity and safeguarding cultural heritage by partnering with private landowners.
At the heart of QEII's work are open space covenants—legal agreements that protect natural and cultural sites in perpetuity while allowing landowners to retain ownership and management. These covenants create a nationwide network of over 5,000 protected areas, spanning more than 180,000 hectares. QEII collaborates with landowners, regional councils, and the Department of Conservation on projects and provides grants, advice, and support to inspire community involvement.
The Challenge
Aligning Membership Cards with Responsible Environmental Standards
As an organisation deeply committed to environmental stewardship, QEII National Trust faces the ongoing challenge of minimising its operational footprint while maintaining high standards for member engagement. Traditional membership cards, often made from PVC or so-called 'green' plastics, contribute to waste, high carbon emissions, and reliance on fossil fuels—issues incompatible with QEII's ethos. With environmental responsibility guiding all decisions, the Trust sought a sustainable alternative that could reduce costs, eliminate waste, and align with its mission to protect habitats and biodiversity.
The Solution
Enviricard's Pioneering Eco-Friendly Cards
Enviricard has delivered an environmentally friendly solution tailored for QEII. These eco-friendly cards are designed for on-demand overprinting using standard Direct-to-Card (DTC) desktop printers, thereby reducing the environmental impact associated with plastic cards. Enviricards are a straightforward switch from plastic to paperboard.
The cards are crafted from Holmen Paper and Board's Invercote Duo, a premium paperboard produced at the fossil fuel-free mill in Iggesund, Sweden, which runs entirely on biomass energy. This ensures a low-carbon material from sustainable sources. Printed on the Ricoh Pro C9500 digital press—developed in partnership with UK-based enviricard Ltd and Green Gift Cards Ltd—the process boasts low energy consumption and zero waste production. The press's new heavy calliper handling capability is a game-changer, enabling efficient production of durable, high-quality paperboard cards without the environmental drawbacks of traditional litho print or plastic materials.Enhancing robustness, the QEII membership cards feature a home-compostable bio-matt laminate on both sides, providing a pleasing aesthetic feel and a protective, water-resistant, and wipeable surface. This combination results in fully biodegradable and recyclable cards replacing PVC entirely. Paired with the Evolis Zenius Expert desktop printer using low-cost wax mono ribbons, QEII's team can personalise cards on demand, for new members—streamlining operations and further reducing waste.
Impact and Benefits
By adopting enviricards, QEII National Trust has achieved a dual win: bolstering its environmental credentials while cutting costs. The shift supports QEII's broader initiatives, such as habitat protection and biodiversity restoration, by ensuring that even administrative operations contribute to sustainability.
Customer Quote
Laura Dalby, Manager Communications and Information stated: "We needed a membership card that was environmentally friendly, that we could overprint on with a standard ID card printer, and that saved us money. Enviricard was the only product we could find that ticked all those boxes. Savings mean more funds make their way to the important work the Trust does in protecting our crucial biodiversity".
Conclusion
This partnership exemplifies how innovative solutions like enviricards can integrate seamlessly into conservation efforts, amplifying QEII National Trust's mission to safeguard New Zealand's natural and cultural heritage for future generations. By choosing enviricards, QEII not only reduces its environmental impact and operational costs, but also sets a powerful example for other organisations. As QEII continues its vital work—protecting over 180,000 hectares and inspiring landowner stewardship—Enviricard is proud to support a greener future, one card at a time.
